His responsibilities have included medical practice, teaching, research and corporate administration, as well as advisory and social roles.

Dr. Basu is a member of several professional medical associations and societies, and has played an active role in many of them over the years. He has participated in a large number of workshops, symposia, conferences and other scientific meets in India and overseas, where he has made presentations, delivered talks and lectures and served as a faculty member as well.
Dr. Debasis Basu is Honorary President of Diabetes Awareness & You (DAY), a social welfare organisation whose objective is to combat rampant diabetes in the Indian population through aggressive dissemination of information with a view to preventing and controlling this scourge in the country. Dr. Basu is involved in several other community services and charitable causes. He has been involved in the charitable activities of the Satya Sai Mission, Lokenath Divine Mission, different districts of Rotary International and various Lions Clubs of Kolkata Calcutta, tending to some 250 underprivileged patients per month. He also delivers health awareness lectures and conducts corporate-sponsored clinics for lipid testing, heart disease, menopause, and diabetes.
On the academic front, Dr. Basu is confident to teach almost any subject (viz. physiology, biochemistry, clinical genetics, pathology, pharmacology, preventive and social medicine and of course internal medicine) in the undergraduate medical school curriculum and any branch of internal medicine in postgraduate medical activities. He is keen to conduct heath awareness camps and identify hotspots such as traffic police stationary booths for measurement of inflammatory and metabolic markers when exposed to air pollution. He is adept at formulating questionnaires related to the relevant fields of medical, environmental and occupational interest. Dr. Basu has also been conducting certificate courses in Evidence-based Diabetes Management for medical graduates and postgraduates, under the aegis of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), since 2010. In addition, he routinely coaches nurses and dieticians in municipal hospitals and other educational institutions.
